New anti-immigration populist party of left expected to split German left | Eastern NC Now

Sahra Wagenknecht to shake up German left

ENCNow

With the populist / nationalist anti-immigration right Alternative fur Deutschland soaring in both the polls and in local and state elections, a project to create a populist anti-immigration party on the left is being launched in Germany.  As expected, the most popular politician of the far left Left Party, successor to the East German Communist Party, Sahra Wagenknecht, the party's former floor leader in parliament is organizing this new party which is as yet unnamed.

Wagenknecht has long split with some of her party elders by taking strident anti-immigration and anti-woke positions and was ultimately sidelined from her leadership position in the Left Party.  Others who feel the way she does have signalled they will follow her out of the party.  This is almost certain to drop the rump of the Left Party below the 5% threshold needed to win seats in the Bundestag.  But she is also expected to pick up enough voters from the Social Democrats to cause that party significant problems, as well as getting her own new party into parliament.  The Social Democrats have already been hemoraging support in the polls and in state elections.

The new party's first electoral outting is likely to be in three state elections in eastern Germany set for next year.  Some polls even suggest that in at least one of those states, the election could produce a populist anti-immigration coalition between the AfD and Wagenknecht's new party.  Wagenknecht and the AfD also agree on stopping the NetZero CO2 restrictions on energy.

What is also encouraging is that the right in Germany is learning to work together, as they have already been able to in Austria, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, and Finland, traditional and populist,   A sign of that in Germany is the CDU, AfD, and Free Voters in the state of Saxony working together to cut 3.5 million euros in handouts to illegal aliens from the state budget
