conservative wing Values Union votes to form new party of the right

ENCNow

The swing to the right among German voters has led to the split of the traditional conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU).  The CDU has moved rightward on many issues including immigration since Merkel left office, but not far enough for the party's most conservative wing, the well organized Values Union.  They are still miffed by the CDU not moving even farther on immigration and the CDU's continued reluctance to work with the populist / nationalist right AfD.  The Values Union was organized in 2017 among CDU members opposed to Merkel's more liberal policies.

Meeting in Erfurt, the Values Union has overwhelmingly voted to split from the CDU and form a new political party of the right, which will take very strong stands against illegal immigration.  The Values Union is led by Hans-Georg Maassen, former head of Germany's domestic intelligence service, who was drummed out of that service for his outspoken opposition to illegal immigration.  Maassen said the party will be organized quickly so that it can participate in elections in three German states that are voting this year, and will be open to cooperating with the AfD.

If it comforts you to think that, then by all means.

No, Bolshevik Bob, it is more a function of you being "woke". "Woke" is extreme left by any measure.

That's more a function of the BO. MAGA is extreme right by any measure.

Bolshevik Bob, your posts reveal you ARE far left. If you think your positions are "centrist" you are delusional.

To do so would be illegal.

I will add, I neither support the far left, or the far right. Extremists on either side tend to be selfish and at times violent.
Politically I prefer the middle of the road. Some of you characterize me as far left, but I'm more of a centrist.

German conservatives are simply not doing those things you mention, Bob, because the National Socialists (Nazis) and German conservatives have never been on the same page. They were at odds in the Weimar Republic and during the Hitler dictatorship, and modern German conservatives do not have any more use for Hitler or the National Socialists than they did when the National Socialists had a massive political presence in the country.

A good example is how the Nazis treated one of the leading symbols of traditional German conservatism, Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was in exile in Holland at Doorn House when the Nazis invaded that country. While he had been at liberty under the Dutch to move around, the Nazis placed him under house arrest under armed guard, and the old kaiser died at Doorn House as a political prisoner of the Nazis during the war. He did not want the Nazis to be able to use him in death for any of their political purposes so he directed in his will that his body was not to be returned to Germany until the monarchy was restored and the Nazis gone. His body remains in the private chapel at Doorn House. House arrest in a nice mansion was better than some of the leaders of the conservative political parties got, as many of them ended up in concentration camps.

The modern far left has a lot more in common with the Nazis than conservatives did or do.

And yet:
The German penal code prohibits publicly denying the Holocaust and disseminating Nazi propaganda, both off- and online. This includes sharing images such as swastikas, wearing an SS uniform and making statements in support of Hitler.
