Canada's Trudeau reeling as his Liberal Party loses another "safe seat" | Eastern NC Now

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reeling after his Liberal Party lost what had long been regarded as a safe seat in Montreal in a special election, three months after losing another safe seat in Toronto.  The Montreal riding (district) of LaSalle-Emard-Verdun had previiously given Trudeau's Liberals a 20-point victory margin, but Monday elected Louis-Phillipe Sauve of the Bloc Quebecois.  The Bloc Quebecois operates only in Quebec and in the last national election openly called on voters outside of Quebec to vote for the Conservative Party.  This time, the Liberals only received 27.2% of the vote in this riding.

The Liberals lost their Toronto safe seat of Toronto-St. Pauls three months ago to Conservative John Stewart in another special election.  National polls show the Conservatives would beat the Liberals in a cakewalk if the election were held today.  The new leader of the Conservatives, Pierre Poilievre is a dynamic small "c" conservative who replaced a more laid back centrist who led the party in the last election.
