Badenoch is first choice of parliament members as final 2 vie for party member votes

ENCNow

Dynamic small "c" conservative Kemi Badenoch, a black woman who immigrated legally from Nigeria as a teenager and who has been a firebrand in parliament for her Conservative Party, was top votegetter as fellow members of parliament chose the final two candidates who will be submitted to party members for a final choice as the new leader of the party.  She will face the number two finisher,  Robert Jenrick, a longtime party moderate who has tried to reinvent himself as a strong small "c" conservative.  Other contenders who campaigned as moderates have been eliminated in multiple rounds of voting by Conservative members of parliament.

Mrs. Badenoch and Jenrick are scheduled for a televised debate on GB News.  Badenoch polls as extremely popular with the party grassroots, and she is viewed as the overwhelming favorite in the vote by party members.

Badenoch's speech in parliament when she was Minister for Women and Equalities in the Boris Johnson cabinet denouncing Black Lives Matter and Critical Race Theory was deemed the Speech of the Year in parliament.  She also served in Rishi Sunak's cabinet as Minister of Foreign Trade.

What is going to be key for the British Conservative Party is going to be having leadership that will develop a cooperative relationship with the populist right Reform Party led by Nigel Farage. Polling puts both parties close in national support, and indicates that working together, they could achieve a parliamentary majority in the next election. Fighting each other, they will divid the conservative vote and let the left in again. The five seats Reform won in parliament this year were all taken from the Conservatives, but more recently, Reform has been capturing Labour seats in local government special elections. I have read that the Bow Group, the oldest conservative think tank in the UK is not impressed with either candidate in terms of working cooperatively with Reform.

Badenoch is an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration. As a black legal commonwealth immigrant, she makes a great spokeswoman against illegal immigration into the UK. It is great to see her on the cusp of becoming leader of the Conservative Party.
