Freedom of speech of journalists being suppressed in Europe in 2 new cases | Eastern NC Now

Two new cases involving journalists in Europe give a frightening glimpse of how freedom of speech is being systematically snuffed out in Europe. One case comes from Germany and the other from France, and follow a long list of attacks by government suppressing free speech in both countries.  The situtation is also particularly dire in the UK and Ireland.

In France a TV journalist for the conservative network CNews during a program oriented to Catholics referred, correctly, to abortion as the world's leading cause of death.  Although factually true, it was something that the French establishment did not want said on TV, so the French media regulator fined the network 100,000 euros and compelled them to apologize on the air.

In Germany, the editor in chief of the conservative news website Deutschland - Kurier has been heavily fined and could face up to three years in prison for posting two satirical memes on controversial Social Democrat Interior Minister Nancy Fraeser.  One of those is a photoshoped image showing Fraeser holding a sign that reads "I hate freedom of expression".  That was published after Fraeser had illegally shut down a conservative magazine in a well publicized raid with dozens of masked policemen, an action that was later overturned in the courts.

Americans can thank our lucky stars that we escaped this same sort of nonsense from free speech opponents Harris and Walz., who George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, who is a leading advocate of free speech, called the most anti-free speech presidential ticket in American history.
