Louisiana's capital city, Baton Rouge has elected a Republican mayor for the first time in decades. Political newcomer Republican Sid Edwards ousted two-term Democrat incumbent Sharon Weston Broome in a surprise upset with 54% of the vote, despite being heavily outspent by Broome. Edwards focused his campaign on the unacceptable rate of crime that existed under Broome and pledged that his top goal would be a crackdown on that crime.
