Norway's center-left gov't collapses over refusal to adopt radical EU Green Deal | Eastern NC Now

Center Party pulls the plug on coalition

ENCNow

Norway's center-left government coalition has collapsed over a dispute on whether to agree to adopt the provisions of the European Union's radical Green Deal.  When the two party coalition's lead party, the Labor Party proposed agreeing to implement the EU Green Deal, its junior partner, the Center Party, refused and left the coalition.  The Center Party objected that the Green Deal would cause Norway's electric rates to skyrocket and be a burden on citizens.

Norway is not a member of the European Union, its citizens having voted in a referendum not to join.  However it has economic agreements with the EU and like Switzerland, is a member of the European Economic Area.  The EU has been pressuring Norway to knuckle under and agree to adopt policies similar to their Green Deal.

For now, the Labor Party is going to try to govern as a minority govenrment, but can be brought down at any time by a vote of no confidence.  In that case, a snap election for parliament would be called by the king.  Labor currently holds 48 seats in the 168 seat parliament.
