For Immediate Release:

By order of Superior Court Judge Wayland Sermons, the Beaufort County Detention Center was reopened for operation at 12:00 p.m. on September 13, 2013. The Sheriff’s Office immediately began to return inmates to the facility in a systematic repopulation process. The return process is expected to take several days to complete.

At the time of the reopening order, 102 Beaufort County inmates were housed at other jails in eastern North Carolina. The Beaufort County Detention Center has a maximum capacity of 85 beds. Some inmates will still have to be housed at other facilities, representing an on-going cost to the County.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the North Carolina Department of Corrections, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in housing Beaufort County inmates since the Detention Center was closed for repairs in June of 2013.
