northeast NC 1st district will again a be 2026 battleground for Congress | Eastern NC Now

primary shaping up for nomination against Don Davis

ENCNow

North Carolina's First Congressional District in the northeastern corner of the state is slated to again be a key battleground for control of Congress.  It is one of thirteen districts around the country that Trump carried for president, but a Democrat won for Congress.

Incumbent liberal Democrat Don Davis is expected to run again.  The two expected Republicans likely to face off in a primary are State Senator Bobby Hanig and Rocky Mount mayor Sandy Roberson.  Hanig has also served as a State Representative and County Commissioner.  It is also possible that perennial candidate Sandy Smith may also run.

Hanig is former vice chairman of the NC House Freedom Caucus and has a conservative voting record in the legislature.  Roberson is regarded as a RINO due to his support for liberal Democrats and his positions on issues.
