North Carolina's 1st Congressional district, which lies due north of Beaufort County and includes adjoining Martin and Washington counties, is a top target for Republicans in 2026. President Trump carried the district in 2024 but it narrowly went to Democrat Congressman Don Davis after a sleazy last minute attack on the GOP nominee, falsely accusing her of being a "RINO".
Republicans will have a primary between candidates from both ends of the spectrum for the nomination to oppose Davis in 2026. Perennial candidate Sandy Smith may also join the race.
The top conservative choice, State Senator Bobby Hanig has announced his candidacy today. Hanig has been one of the few conservatives with the backbone to stand up to liberal Senate boss Phil Berger on key issues, and has the most conservative voting record in the state Senate. Prior to serving in the State Senate, Hanig served in the State House and as a Currituck County Commissioner.
Hanig is expected to face liberal Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson, who has a history of endorsing liberal Democrats over Republican candidates, in the primary.
One of Hanig's most recent accomplishments was alerting and energizing the opposition to Phil Berger's brazen attempt to shut down the shrimping industry in eastern North Carolina and he is one of the stars of this recent video on Shrimpgate:

Word has it that recently retired Superior Court Judge Jerry Tillet, a conservative, may seek this senate seat that Sen. Hanig is leaving. He would be a good replacement. Hanig is what we need in Congress, NOT either of the Sandies.

With a candidate of the caliber of Senator Hanig, we ought to be able to win this seat in 2026. Hopefully, the party will rally around him without a primary.

Hanig was instrumental is saving the shrimping industry when the special interests tried to shut it down, and he has stood tall on lots of other issues, too. He is the polar opposite of Undocumented Democrat Sandy Roberson.

Anyone that had anything to do with the attempt to shut down the shrimping industry should not only be shunned but also be run out of politics on a rail.
