    Lucile Geoghegan Cheshire, 77, wife of William Polk Cheshire, of Washington, NC, died Thursday, November 7, 2013 after a struggle with lung cancer.

    She is survived by her husband; a son William Polk Cheshire, Jr., M.D., and daughter-in-law Doris Elisabeth Schmidt Cheshire of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; a daughter Helen Wood Cheshire Elder of Chesapeake, VA; and a son James Webb Cheshire, II, and daughter-in-law Rebecca Ruth Gleason Cheshire of Keller, TX; ten grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews and many loving cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, James Christopher Geoghegan of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

    She was born October 31, 1936, the only daughter of Christopher Wilson Geoghegan and Helen Irene Beck Geoghegan of South Hill, VA. She was graduated from South Hill High School and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, now Mary Washington University, in Fredericksburg, VA. Following college and prior to marriage, on Aug. 1, 1959, she was employed in public relations for Everett Waddey Company of Richmond, VA.

    She and her husband moved from Phoenix, AZ, to Washington, NC, in 1996. Prior to retirement she had been active in various civic and charitable organizations in Virginia, North and South Carolina, West Virginia, the District of Columbia and Arizona, notably those involved in education, historic preservation and working with troubled youth and the handicapped. Among the groups with which she was active were the Junior League in the two Carolinas, West Virginia and Virginia, and the Carolina Assembly and Historic Charleston Foundation in South Carolina. She also worked as a volunteer seminar organizer for the international studies program of the University of Charleston in Charleston, WV.

    Until her recent illness and confinement at home she was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Washington.

    There will be a celebration of her life on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, Washington, officiated by Pastor Danny Allen. A private burial will be held at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.

    In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, Wesley Hall Building Fund, 304 W. 2nd St., Washington, NC 27889.
