anti-immigration party surges in eastern Germany as two critical state elections approach | Eastern NC Now

With two key elections in eastern German states coming in September, the anti-immigration Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD) party is surging in the polls.  The AfD also calls for the end of the Energiewende which is Germany's green new deal, returning Germany's sovereignty from the European Union, and mass deportation of illegal aliens.

German states hold their elections at staggered times and years.  The key east German states of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Lower Pomerania will be voting for their Landtags (parliaments) in early September.  The more left-leaning state of Berlin also votes in September.  Saxony-Anhalt will be first to the polls on September 6.

A new poll by the respected German polling firm Forsa for a German TV station shows that across eastern Germany, the AfD has a wide lead over other parties.   AfD alone gets 43% of the vote, far ahead of the second placed Left Party (the old East German communist party) and the third placed center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU),

The poll gives the AfD 43%, the Left Party 16%, the CDU 13%, the far left Green Party and the c;enter-left Social Democrats tied at 9% each, and no other party crossing the 5% threshold to win seats.  Given the leftwing skew and heavy population of Berlin, which is included in the poll, this would likely translate to an outright AfD majority in the other east German states.

One twist is that this poll asked voting intentions for the federal Bundestag, not the state Landtags, and some voters may vote differently between state and national elections.
