Some globalist oriented center-right leaders in a few European countries have really got their panties in a twist over the landslide victory of the anti-immigration right Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD) in the Saxony-Anhalt state election in Germany. That has been particularly true of Poland's prime minister Donald Tusk and some leaders of Germany's Christian Democrats. In contrast in many European countries, the populist nationalist anti-immigration right and traditional conservatives have learned to work together.
In Poland, Tusk, leader of the center-right but globalist Civic Platform called anyone who supported AfD "idiots or traitors". Tusk just had his choice for Poland's president soundly defeated by a candidate of the populist nationalist anti-immigration right, and faces a parliamentary election next year in which his party trails a combination of three parties of the populist nationalist anti-immigration right in the polls.
In Germany, itself, the CDU Minister-President (government leader) of the state of North Rhein - Westphalia, Henrik Wust has called for banning the AfD, which according to national polls is the country's most popular political party and is also the official opposition in the national Bundestag. The message apparently is "if you can't beat then, ban them." Wust's state has its state election next April itself, and he clearly is desperate to avoid the fate of his party colleagues in Saxony-Anhalt who had ruled that state for 24 years until this month. Previously in Germany, rival parties have been banned by Adolf Hitler and by the East German Communists.
In most of Europe, traditional conservatives and populist nationalist conservatives have learned to work together. They have joined forces in national governing coalitions in Norway, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Austria, Slovenia, and Slovakia, and state or provincial governing coalitions in many of those countries plus Spain. Populist conservatives also currently prop up minority traditional conservative governments in Sweden and Portugal.
In Germany, the establishment parties have erected a "firewall" around the AfD, refusing to cooperate with it in government at state or national level. Current CDU Chancellor Merz has been dogmatic in this, although his local party leadership in Saxony-Anhalt has been very vocal that they would much rather work with the AfD than the old East German Communist Party, now known as the Left Party. That might not matter, however, because Sahra Wagenkrecht, leader of the BSW, an anti-immigration party of the left that also joins AfD positions against the "woke" culture and climate alarmism, has openly denounced the "firewall" and has called on her local party to work constructively based on common issues. While a populist right / populist left coalition, like Italy once had between the League and the 5 Star Movement, is not out of the question, a more likely scenario would be a minority AfD state government supported on the outside by the BSW. BSW's 5 seats would give AfD a two seat governing majority.
