Rabbit Patch Diaries

Visiting a rabbit patch ought to be a sweet occasion. I am on a mission to make sure this truth unfolds as naturally as stories passed between old friends. If you find any wisdom here,it probably was learned around a kitchen table-the same can be said of the whimsy. The “Rabbit Patch Diary” is my account of things that I love-Things that bring comfort and joy to my life. I am a collector of beauty in things I see, words spoken as gently as a poet lives and moments that make all the difference in the season of life. I am a mother of five beautiful children that are all grown up. I am a violinist, but I am also a writer. It’s the way I share the treasures I find . My hope is that you will find your time in the rabbit patch well-spent, and that some of its charm makes your heart glad you came.

I came to Elizabeth City, on Friday, after school with high hopes, of all sorts. The drive was really beautiful.

It was not raining when I woke on Sunday. There was a bit of wind rattling the bare oak branches and the sky was that now familiar, pale pewter color.

It is Friday again and it seems it was just Friday, a few days ago! Here we are in the "short rows" of winter, already. I notice that seasons, now seem but a few weeks, and the years zip pass, too.

Friday has a different "feel" to it, in months like February, when the school year is in full swing.

I am not sure whether it was "Beginners' Luck" or what . . . but I made apple dumplings that are good enough to brag about.

There is a heavy frost this morning. The morning sunshine causes it it to sparkle and glisten, as if it were a field of crystals.

A lot of people declare that January is the longest month. I suspect that the commotion in December and the New Year celebrations causes us to get used to a state of perpetual motion.

he first Sunday of the New Year dawned bright and clear. I love Sunday mornings-I am never as inspired or as reflective on any other day.

Somehow, school started back with its' routine - and somehow I did it all again.

The eve of the new year dawned quietly. The sky simply became a silvery blue.

So far, today is an ordinary day . . . of course, it is only mid morning. It has been weeks since, a day went along as it usually does, without an agenda-or a single plan.

The Rabbitpatch was quiet on Christmas morning. Christian had to work an early shift, Will and Jenny were home with the children, of course . . well everybody was somewhere else.

Every river I crossed was just a little more blue than the sky. The detour was still active, and this made the trip a bit longer, but still I managed to get there before twilight.

I have never fancied driving in general, not even in youth and never after dark.

For just a little while, fluffy flakes fell, til a few inches had accumulated. People either love or hate snow, in the south. I love it.

Sometimes one day turns into another, in an ordinary fashion. I strive to have as many of those as I can.

The last few days have been cold. Nights are below freezing and in the day, we southeners, now don our "winter coats".

I told Jenny, today, that one day, I am going to think about flowers and things like pretty curtains . . like I used to.

At last, a"hard frost" fell on the territory. It came late this year, as compared to most.

It was nice to have a few days off - and I made the most of it. I came to Elizabeth City and spent my time doing the things that I hold dearest, rocking Brynn, playing with Lyla and cooking.

It did not matter one iota, that the time changed. Somehow, I managed to awaken at my usual hour

One day turned into another, until somehow, a week had passed. There were all sorts of things going on. Daddy had doctor appointments, there was work and last but not least, the business of selling the rabbit patch.

I spent this weekend at the rabbit patch, in Farm Life, amongst the old trees, the young woods and the abandoned little pasture. It has been a long while since I was here on a weekend.

The first thing I did this morning, was to put the windows down. I heard the wind rev up before day break. The wind nearly howled and a hail storm of acorns made an awful racket, on the old farmhouse.

The October climate deserves a crown. For the last few weeks, any given day could have been a post card-with bragging rights.

As I write this, it is "pitch dark" out. The world is quiet and the sky is starless.
