Since Vidant Health announced the closure of Pungo Hospital in September, 2013, Belhaven residents have been struggling with the uncertainty of future access to healthcare.
 
At a community meeting at Vidant Pungo Hospital in Belhaven, Dr. David Herman, president and CEO of Vidant Health, unveiled more details about the agreement to keep Vidant Pungo Hospital open and to transfer ownership of the hospital to the Belhaven community.

The Beaufort County Commission held a special called meeting Monday (9-30-13) to discuss what they could do to help with the Pungo Hospital issue. Vidant is closing the facility and replacing it with an "urgent care" clinic that it says will operate 24/7/365.
