As lawmakers in the General Assembly are poised to consider a bill that would streamline the process of approving new charter schools, a statewide charter advocacy organization reports that more than 77,000 students remain on waitlists to join charter schools.

At the end of the 2010-11 school year, the state had 99 charter schools that enrolled around 41,200 children, and thousands of children remained on waitlists, hoping to be among the lucky few selected in an enrollment lottery.

Earlier this year Governor Cooper vetoed the compromise budget drafted by Republicans in the state House and Senate. The budget added thousands of slots to the state's pre-K program and eliminated 75% of the waitlist for at-risk children
