Let the Right One In | Eastern North Carolina Now

Or possibly, you may question your sanity as to why you just spent 115 minutes of your precious time to wade through some fairly disturbing images, just to catch up on what passes for a preadolescent monster posing as an innocent, precociously wise and complex character study of a "girl gone wild."

ENCNow
Here Oskar, with his mother, invite Eli in: Above. The blood streaming down Eli's face is her own, and this is what happens when Eli is not invited in: Below.

After one of Eli's feeding frenzies, she scampers up to Oskar's upper floor bedroom, as beg's to be invited in. Once entering the warmth of the room, she takes off her bloody clothes, and naked, climbs into bed with the pre-adolescent boy. Unsettling ... well, Eli is nearly 200 years old and has no reproductive organs. Yes, it is weird, but what did you expect? It's a Swedish Vampire film, with English subtitles: Above.

One word of advice: the DVD that I rented immediately began playing the film in dubbed English, which nearly destroyed the flavor of it for me. I highly recommend watching the film in Swedish, with the English subtitles, if that is your native tongue. I also suggest that if you do not have an open mind, do not watch the film at all. Seeing a 12 year old child feed on another human's blood may repulse the more normal among us. For the rest of you: enjoy the film.

Rated R. Released on DVD March 10, 2009.
