The canals that flooded the rice fields, as well as the dense vegetation that sunk deep roots in this swampy soil, was cleared by hand, by African slaves.

Since Brookgreen Gardens is so close to Pawleys Island - the one beach in northeastern South Carolina that most reminds me of North Carolina's Outer Banks - we just had to go there to soak up the last beautiful hours of the day: Above and below. images by Stan Deatherage
