Mr. Ray W. Manning, 77, a resident of John Small Ave., Washington, N.C., had an unexpected stroke on Sunday at his home and passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center.

    Ray W. Manning, 77, a resident of John Small Ave., Washington, N.C., had an unexpected stroke on Sunday at his home and passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center. The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Hillside Funeral Service and other times at the home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, officiated by the Rev. Ray Webb. Burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens, with military honors. Mike Mizell, Jr., Jason Hardison, Paul Carver, Raymond Carver, Shane Vanderpool, and Harley Alligood will serve as pallbearers.

    Mr. Manning was born on March 16, 1934, in Hancock, Mich., son of the late Richard Manning and Mamie Fredrickson Manning. After high school, he attended and was a graduate of Architectural School. He served in the Air Force and later worked in Washington, D.C. for the federal government in human resources for 30 years. On Oct. 15, 1977, he married the former Margaret "Peggy" Woodruff, who survives.

    Along with his wife, Mr. Manning is survived by five sons, Richard Manning of Las Vegas, Nev., Randy Manning of Gainesville, Fla., Russell Manning of Gainesville, Fla., Robbie Manning of Las Vegas, Nev., and Raymond Manning of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Roxanne Gore of Gainesville, Fla., and Renee M. Ridley of Georgia; three step-children, Larry Vanderpool, Brian Thompson, and Linda Keech; seventeen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one brother, Ed Manning.
