Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

The Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees on Tuesday agreed to seek an increase in appropriations from the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners in the coming fiscal year with the majority of the increase coming from needed construction projects. The construction projects include replacing the remaining soffit around Building 5, installing a coating on the roofs of Buildings 5 and 9 to extend the warranty on the recent repairs, upgrading the 40-year-old heating and air conditioning system in Building 1, installing electronic door locks for building exterior doors and an exterior emergency notification system and paving the parking lot beside Building 12. The board also reviewed projected state appropriations for the coming fiscal year. BCCC currently anticipates a cut of about $225,485, or about two percent, in state appropriations during the next fiscal year although the state appropriation will depend on action by the state legislature later this year. Watch for more information about appropriations to the community college in the coming weeks and months.

    Gullfest

    • Our campus community and all of our friends are invited to attend BCCC's inaugural spring festival, Gullfest, Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. We're expecting good weather, good food, a wide variety of arts and crafts for sale, a terrific car show and an appearance by Ben Jones, aka Cooter. Several public officials have agreed to serve time in jail to support scholarships for students seeking their high school equivalency and Vice President of Student Services Rick Anderson will be taped to a wall in front of Building 1. We will have a fossil dig, bounce houses and trucks galore for young people to explore and the N.C. National Guard will bring their paintball arena. Thanks very much to Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards and her team for their hard work in planning this event. We hope it will become a signature event for the college.

Here's what else happened on our campus this week:

    "BCCC's Best" Nominations

Nominations are being accepted through Tuesday, April 15, for the last "BCCC's Best" character trait to be recognized this academic year. The character trait for April is "Hard Worker - someone who demonstrates a work ethic that will lead to success." To nominate a student send an email to Director of Counseling Kimberly Jackson with "BCCC's Best" in the subject line. In the body of the email, list the student's name, student identification number if you have it and a short description of how the student has exemplified this trait in your class or your contact with them. Any staff or faculty member can nominate a student. Nominated students will be recognized April 29. If you have any questions, please contact Kimberly at 252-940-6252. Following the summer break, "BCCC's Best" will be recognized again starting in September.

    Free Day at BCCC

    • Registration is continuing for Free Day at BCCC. On Free Day, BCCC is opening its doors to give prospective students 16 years old or older the chance to attend actual classes and meet potential instructors in their classrooms for free. Attendees of Free Day at BCCC will also have the chance to talk to BCCC staff about admissions, career planning, financial aid, college transfers and academic counseling. Twelve classes in a variety of disciplines – allied health, arts and sciences, business and industry - are available for prospective students to attend. If you know of someone who would benefit from Free Day, encourage them to register at www.beaufortccc.edu.

    Happy Video

    • Computer Information Technology and Computer Programming Instructor Ken Robol continues to recruit students, faculty and staff to participate in a video production to celebrate the 2014 graduating class. BCCC trustees are invited to participate as well. The video will be shot on campus and will include a music sound track. It is planned to be shown at Graduate Student Recognition and at graduation. To participate, contact Ken by email at kenr@beaufortccc.edu or at 940-6330.

    Professional Development @ BCCC

Topics for the 50-minute sessions include subjects such as Office 2013, Flipped Classroom, the Local Economy and BCCC, the Human Brain and Advising, among others. All sessions will be in Building 1. They will work like a mini-conference — participants will chose a session and attend; no signing up required! Thanks very much to Penny and her team for their hard work on this project!
