Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

About 1,000 people visited the Beaufort County Community College campus this week as part of Advanced Manufacturing Awareness Week. The week began with a kick-off dinner on Monday night attended by about 50 guests who heard Economic Development Director Bob Heuts, Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Don Phipps and myself discussing our ideas for improving the education and job opportunities in the region. About 800 middle and high school students toured our manufacturing programs during the week and many visited with their parents on Tuesday night during an Open House. Two industries — PAS and idX Impressions — opened their doors to BCCC students, faculty, staff and members of the public so we could see advanced manufacturing first-hand. And 410 people attended the Career Fair where job seekers and employers could meet and students could visit with BCCC instructors to learn about training for their chosen careers. Thanks very much to all members of the Advanced Manufacturing Awareness Week Committee and the Special Events Committee and all the volunteers for their hard work on this week's successful events.

Here's what else happened on our campus this week:

    Gullfest

    • About 3,000 to 4,000 members of our local community attended BCCC's inaugural spring festival, Gullfest, Saturday, April 5. We all know that BCCC is a great place and now the community knows it too. We received many, many compliments on Gullfest and many comments on the large number of faculty, staff and students who made it happen. Another observation several of us made was how many retirees and former students came out to enjoy the day. The ones I heard from were delighted to see the campus alive with activity. I will not thank any one person or group other than the Core Team and Expanded Team who worked diligently since January to pull together Gullfest. If I began thanking all of the volunteers, clubs and organizations, those who had Saturday duty, etc., I would leave someone out. Please accept my thanks for your many contributions to make Gullfest a great day at BCCC. You are the best!

    "BCCC's Best" Nominations

    * Nominations are being accepted through Tuesday, April 15, for the last "BCCC's Best" character trait to be recognized this academic year. The character trait for April is "Hard Worker - someone who demonstrates a work ethic that will lead to success." To nominate a student send an email to Director of Counseling Kimberly Jackson with "BCCC's Best" in the subject line. In the body of the email, list the student's name, student identification number if you have it and a short description of how the student has exemplified this trait in your class or your contact with them.
