Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

BCCC saluted its graduates this week at the annual Graduate Recognition Ceremony. Among those honored were Vickie Wilkinson, BCCC's Academic Excellence Award winner; Ronnie James, BCCC's Robert W. Scott Leadership Award recipient, and A.J. Middleton, BCCC's Dallas W. Herring Award recipient. These were just three of the outstanding students recognized by faculty and staff at the event. Congratulations to all of our students who will be graduating in a few weeks! We will miss you but we are looking forward to watching your success as you leave our campus and go on to achieve your goals in life. We also look forward to your receiving your diplomas and certificates on Thursday, May 15. For photographs of the event, visit the BCCC Facebook Page.

Here's what else happened on our campus recently:

    BCANS Activities

    • Members of BCCC's Beaufort County Association of Nursing Students attended the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students 2014 Annual Convention. This year's theme was "Live Your Passion,

Find Your Niche in Nursing." Activities included presentations by featured speakers, an exhibit hall, networking luncheon and a question and answer panel with experienced nursing experts. The group also announced the names of three winners of BCANS scholarships - Practical Nursing student Shaneka Little and Associate Degree Nursing students Aimie Roberson and Kellen Edwards. Thanks to our BCANS members and their advisor Sherry Glover for representing BCCC at the convention and for their efforts to raise money for these scholarships!

    BCCC Ambassadors

    • Five students have been chosen by the BCCC Foundation to represent BCCC as new Ambassadors for the 2014-2015 Academic Year. Those chosen are Sarah Clingenpeel, Jamaal Cofield, Caren Cooper,

Daniel Garza Salazar and Catherine Spring. They join Genesis Burgos, Kenyetta Burnette, Lucy Garcia, Jackson Lancaster and Amy Tinker who continue their appointments as Ambassadors. I congratulate

these outstanding individuals who will serve as the face of BCCC for the coming year and I thank Foundation Director Judy Jennette and those who served on the selection committee.

    BCCC Board of Trustees

    • I am pleased to announce that the Beaufort County Board of Education has re-appointed Board of Trustee member Mitchell St. Clair, Sr., to another four-year term on the board. Mr. St. Clair is a former board chairman and will continue to bring great insight to our board meetings.

    • The BCCC Board of Trustees met with the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners and presented BCCC's local budget request. BCCC is requesting $3,180,434 in county appropriations for the 2014- 2015 Fiscal Year, a 27.8 percent increase, or $691,031 more than the previous year's budget. The majority of that increase is associated with a requested $652,500 increase in BCCC's capital budget for the next fiscal year. The current expense, or operating, budget request for Fiscal Year 2014-2015 includes $1,184,125 for salaries and benefits, $183,734 for contracted services and insurance, $561,300 for utilities, $104,000 for supplies, $175,000 for repairs to facilities and $62,775 for miscellaneous expenses. This is a 1.73 percent increase over the 2013-2014 budget request. The capital, or construction budget, request divides proposed capital projects into two categories – minor maintenance items totaling $145,000 and major capital improvement projects totaling $670,000 – for a total of $909,500, an increase of $652,500 or 253.89 percent over the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year request. The capital budget request includes $49,500 for four new vehicles – two for the BLET Program, one for the Maintenance Department and one for the BCCC vehicle pool. The major capital expense budget includes $90,000 to replace the northern end of the soffit in Building 5; $120,000 for the silicone coating for Buildings 9 and 5; $250,000 for an upgrade of the HVAC system in Building 1; $25,000 for electronic exterior door locks; $35,000 for an exterior emergency notification system, and $150,000 to pave the overflow parking lot beside Building 12. I thank Vice President of Administrative Services Mark Nelson and his team for their hard work on this request and our county commissioners for their attendance and continued support of BCCC.

    Gamma Beta Phi Diaper Drive

    • BCCC's Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society has extended its diaper drive until May 2. Items are being collected in Building 9 near the office of Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards and the lobby of Building 12. The items will be donated to the Carolina Pregnancy Center.

    Digital Sign Campaign Update

    • Foundation Director Judy Jennette reports that a total of $31,594 in donations and pledges have been received for the Digital Sign Campaign at BCCC. To make a donation, contact Judy at 252-940-6326.

    Professional Development @ BCCC

    • Faculty and staff came together Wednesday to attend 50-minute professional development sessions under the direction of Director of Learning Resources and Distance Learning Penny Sermons. Topics for the sessions included subjects such as Office 2013, Flipped Classroom, the Local Economy and BCCC, the Human Brain and Advising, among others. Most of the sessions were presented by BCCC's own faculty and staff who shared valuable information with all of those attending. Thanks very much to Penny and her team for arranging the sessions and to all of our presenters for a very effective and informative afternoon!

    Registration

    • Preliminary registration numbers for Fall 2014 Semester contain some good news. As of the third day of registration, there were 931 students registered to attend BCCC this fall compared to 728 at the same time for Fall 2913 Semester. FTE is also up as compared to the same time last year with a total of 368.7 FTE for Fall 2014 as compared to 259.44 FTE for Fall 2013 at the same time last year. These trends may change between now and the start of fall semester. Still, I congratulate to all of those involved in making registration a success!
