Hagan’s Energy Legacy | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Millions Of Jobs Killed, Skyrocketing Energy Bills

Raleigh, N.C. - Thanks to Kay Hagan, the Obama administration today announced a devastating new rule capping carbon emissions from existing coal-fired power plants, which in turn will destroy millions of jobs, cause electricity prices to skyrocket, and strike another blow to America's already struggling economy.

A report released last week by the Chamber of Commerce finds that the EPA's new carbon regulations will destroy 224,000 jobs and $51 billion in economic output every year through 2030.

Liberal Kay Hagan has been a rubber-stamp for Obama's anti-energy policies, including voting against commonsense offshore oil drilling, and supporting a cap and trade tax that would cost North Carolina households a staggering $1,761 a year.

Despite Hagan's likely election-year attempt to distance herself from today's new EPA rule, the fact is that she repeatedly voted against legislation stripping the Obama administration's authority to impose job-killing EPA regulations without Congressional approval.

The bottom-line: Hagan made today's regulation possible, and now North Carolina ratepayers and middle-class families will pay the price with skyrocketing electricity bills.

It's no wonder why Hagan has been embraced by radical environmental special interest groups, which are now spending millions of dollars to re-elect her so she can continue to implement their fringe job-killing agenda.

"Kay Hagan has voted in lock-step to implement President Obama's failed energy policies, giving him the power to impose crippling new regulations that will destroy millions of jobs, cause electricity prices to skyrocket, and devastate North Carolina's energy industry," said Tillis for U.S. Senate campaign manager Jordan Shaw. "Instead of fighting to create jobs and protect North Carolina middle-class families, Kay Hagan has spent her time in Washington advancing cap and trade and other job-killing energy policies to placate the radical far-left special interest groups now supporting her campaign."

BACKGROUND: Kay Hagan's Support For Obama's Radical Anti-Energy Agenda

Just Last Week, Hagan Told A Far-Left Special Interest Group That She Supported "The EPA's Ability To Regulate Greenhouse Gas Emissions." "...I know the EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions is key to protecting our environment for future generations." (Cullen Browder, "Hagan comes out swinging against Tillis," WRAL, 5/28/14)

Hagan Supported A Devastating Cap And Trade Bill Capping Greenhouse Emissions That Would Cause Electricity Prices To Skyrocket, Costing American Households $1,761 A Year.

  • "The bill, known as the Climate Security Act, includes provisions for a variety of special interests, from job-training funds for renewable energy workers to funding for green buildings. At its heart, though, the bill is a basic cap-and-trade system for energy companies that emit greenhouse gases...state Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro, supports the bill, which her spokeswoman said fit Hagan's energy plan offered this spring." (Barbara Barrett, "Climate Bill Has Unlikely Ally," Charlotte Observer, 6/6/08)
  • "A previously unreleased analysis prepared by the U.S. Department of Treasury says the total in new taxes would be between $100 billion to $200 billion a year. At the upper end of the administration's estimate, the cost per American household would be an extra $1,761 a year." (Declan McCullagh, "Obama Admin: Cap And Trade Could Cost Families $1,761 A Year," 9/15/09)

In 2011, Hagan Voted Against An Amendment That Would Have Stripped The EPA Of Its Authority To Regulate Greenhouse Emissions. "To prohibit the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from promulgating any regulation concerning, taking action relating to, or taking into consideration the emission of a greenhouse gas to address climate change." (S.Amdt. 183 to S.493, Roll Call #54, Rejected 50-50: R 46-1; D 4-49, 4/6/11, Hagan Voted Nay)

In 2011, Hagan Voted Against A Joint Resolution That Would Have Disapproved The EPA's Rationale For Regulating Greenhouse Gas Emissions. (S.J. Res. 26, Roll Call Vote #184: Motion To Proceed Failed 47-53, 6/10/10, Hagan Voted Nay)

In 2013, Hagan Voted Against An Amendment That Would Have Prohibited The EPA's Regulation Of Greenhouse Emissions. "To reduce spending and decrease the risk of drastic energy price increases by prohibiting further greenhouse gas regulations for the purposes of addressing climate change." (S. Amdt. 359 To S. Con. Res. 8, Roll Call Vote #76: Rejected 47-52, 3/23/13, Hagan Voted Nay)
