    Mrs. Sharron Lee Washabaugh Sopher, age 75, a resident of Cypress Landing, Chocowinity, died peacefully Tuesday morning September 23, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC from complications of a recent stroke.

    A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Friday September 26, 2014 in Wesley Hall at Washington First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Danny Allen and Rev. Chris Leak. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Tyler Souza, Jacob Souza, James Sprinkle, Jack Sprinkle, Harry Sprinkle and Steve Mobley will serve as pallbearers. Edwin Hill and Joe Sopher will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM in Wesley Hall.

    Mrs. Sopher was born in Galesburg, Illinois on January 21, 1939, eldest daughter of the late Dale and Avis Morse Washabaugh. She was a1957 graduate of Knoxville High School in Illinois. On December 29, 1957, she married Charles Duane Sopher. In 1963, Mrs. Sopher moved to North Carolina, where she lived with her family for much of the remainder of her life. While living in Cary, Edenton and Winston-Salem, NC, she enjoyed working as both a book keeper and a librarian. Mrs. Sopher moved to the Washington area in 1999, and at the time of her passing, was co-owner of C&S AgriSystems and Turning Point Construction. Mrs. Sopher was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Washington and current secretary of the Endowment Committee. Wherever she lived, she was always active in the Methodist Church, serving for many years as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Leader, and well as being past president of the Edenton United Methodist Women.

    In addition to her husband of 56 years, Charles, Mrs. Sopher is survived by her son, Matthew Sopher of Washington, NC, and her daughter, Kellie Sopher Souza (Michael) of Alexandria, VA, as well as four grandsons, Nathan and Joseph Sopher, and Tyler and Jacob Souza. She is also survived by her brother, Paul Washabaugh, an aunt and brother-in-law, Alice Thurman and Joe Sopher, both of Knoxville, IL, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger sister, Sandra.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 715, 304 West Second Street, Washington, NC 27889.
