Obituary: Gloria McGowan Alligood

    Mrs. Gloria Marlene McGowan Alligood, age 77, a resident of 161 Pungo View Road, Belhaven, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven, conducted by Norman Miller and the Rev. Greg Nunley. Burial will follow in St. Clair’s Church of Christ Cemetery. The following will serve as active pallbearers: Buck Radcliffe, Eddie Griffin, John Charles Woolard, Georgie Baker, Kyle Alligood and Kevin Alligood. Trey Manning will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

    Mrs. Alligood was born in Beaufort County on May 8, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Julian Ralph McGowan and Malvina Ross McGowan. Mrs. Alligood graduated from Bath High School in 1951. She was a homemaker and previously worked as secretary of Edgewater Motors. Mrs. Alligood was a member of the First Christian Church in Belhaven. She was a member of the Church Choir and the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Mrs. Alligood was also a member of the Eastern Star.

    Mrs. Alligood is survived by her husband of 58 years, Jack Alligood of the home; two sons, Douglas Kevin Alligood and Patsy Robins of Belhaven, Thomas Evan Alligood and wife, Mary Bishop Alligood of Greenville; a brother, Tony McGowan of Bath; and five grandchildren, Kevin Alligood, Kyle Alligood, Madison Alligood, and Breanna Alligood all of Greenville, Jackie Stalls of Baton Rouge, LA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Alligood was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Alligood Stalls.

    The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until the funeral hour at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven and after the graveside service at the home.
