Tansey Topics: A Weekly Look At What's Happening At BCCC From President Barbara Tansey | Eastern North Carolina Now

Welcome back to BCCC for the start of Spring 2015 Semester! Our enrollment numbers are growing, according to a preliminary analysis by Vice President of Research and Institutional Effectiveness Jay Sullivan. As of January 7, our enrollment for spring was 2,113, an increase of 216 over the same time last year. Also good news was the full-time equivalents which at 789.95 remained steady as compared to the same time last year. These numbers represent a lot of hard work by all of our faculty and staff who helped with admissions, advising, financial aid, marketing, registration and a host of activities leading to the start of classes this week. You worked exceptionally hard to generate positive FTEs during a statewide decline. You are awesome! Of course these numbers could change before the final tabulations are made but I thank you all for a successful start of a new year!

Here's a look at BCCC events happening on campus and in the community:

BCCC Foundation

  • There is a waiting list for the upcoming Foundation trip to see MOTOWN, the Musical at the Durham Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 21. The trip is tentatively scheduled to include a meeting with Ralph G. Barrett, assistant professor and chairman of the Department of Music at North Carolina Central University, and lunch at 'Que, the latest restaurant venture by Pitmaster Ed Mitchell. The cost of the trip, which includes round-trip transportation, lunch and orchestra seats at the musical, is $200. If you have made a reservation for the trip but have not yet paid, please do so by Friday, January 16. Some seats may be available after this deadline so if you are interested, contact Interim Director Marcia Norwood at 252-940-6218 to have your name placed on the wait list.
  • The Foundation is now accepting registrations for an upcoming trip to Canyon Country USA! The fullyescorted tour is scheduled for Oct. 10 to 18, 2015 and is offered by Collette through New Trends in Travel. The cost of the trip is $3,159 per person based on double occupancy at hotels in Scottsdale, Grand Canyon National Park, Page, Ariz., Zion National Park and Las Vegas, seven breakfasts and five dinners during the trip, round-trip airfare from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, air taxes and fees and hotel transfers. Transportation to the airport in Raleigh is available for an additional charge of $60. It is co-sponsored by the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce. A special presentation about the trip is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, March 16, in the Multi-Purpose Room of Building 10 on the BCCC campus. Those interested in attending the presentation are asked to reserve a place by contacting the Chamber office at 252-946-9168 or by email at rmckeithan@wbcchamber.com.

Division of Continuing Education

  • Vice President of Continuing Education Stacey Gerard reports that registration is brisk for all continuing education classes following the recent publication of the division's first comprehensive catalog in many years. She reports that as of Thursday morning, 233 students have registered and several classes have already reached their minimum enrollment! Thanks very much to Stacey and her team for their hard work developing the catalog and promoting the classes available through the division.
  • BCCC's Small Business Center was in the news over the holidays for its work in helping a Belhaven restaurant, the Tavern at Jack's Neck, grow its business. You can read the article at http://www.thewashingtondailynews.com/2014/12/22/economic-aide-local-restaurant-thrives-thanks-to-small-biz-center/. Our Small Business Center has an important role to play in economic development in our community. Thanks to center Director Lentz Stowe for his work on behalf of this and other small businesses in the area.
  • Don't forget the gift certificates available from BCCC's Division of Continuing Education. The division has a lot of new classes starting this winter and spring include local African-American history, guitar lessons, organic gardening, social media exploration, wine appreciation, College for Kids and many others that someone on your holiday list would enjoy. For more information about these certificates, contact Eva Peartree at 252-940-6375 or visit the division's webpage at www.beaufortccc.edu/coned/ contin.htm.

Emergency Procedure

  • With the start of a new semester, Police Chief Chris Harrison reminds everyone of emergency procedures as they relate to contacting first responders. If an emergency arises such as a medical emergency, please dial 911 immediately. Do not telephone the switchboard and ask the receptionist to call 911 or try to contact campus police because this creates delays that could endanger a life.

Gullfest

  • Gullfest, the spring festival at Beaufort County Community College to be held April 18 and 19, will feature a new event for the 2015 event - the first Miss Gullfest Pageant. Pageant organizers hope to draw participants to compete for nine titles while raising money for scholarships and other activities of the BCCC Foundation and college community. The pageant is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in the Multi-Purpose Room of Building 10 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $75 for each contestant which will be refunded if the contestant raises $150 in sponsorships from family, friends or local businesses. The pageant will include competition in five divisions - Preschool through second grade for Tiny Miss Gullfest; third through fifth grades for Little Miss Gullfest; sixth through eighth grades for Teen Miss Gullfest; ninth through 12th grades for Miss Gullfest and College Miss Gullfest for current BCCC students. A maximum of 15 contestants will be accepted per division. The registration deadline is March 20. For more information about this event, contact pageant Chairman Sara Singleton, BCCC grant writer, at 940-6271 or by email at sara.singleton@beaufortccc.edu. Personal and Personnel Notes

  • Congratulations to Michele Mayo who began work this year as our new Director of Admissions and to Felicia Carr who has been named Assistant to the Registrar! I look forward to working with these two in their new roles here at BCCC.
  • We have some new faces on campus this semester. Keith Sullivan has joined the Office of Research and Institutional Effectiveness as our Web Master. Ben Godard has joined the Business Division faculty as Electrical/Electronics Engineering Instructor. Dr. Elizabeth Brown has joined the Arts and Sciences faculty as Anatomy and Physiology Instructor. I welcome all these individuals to campus and know we will enjoy working with them.
  • While we are welcoming some individuals, we have to say goodbye to Safety Inspector Eddie Allen who leaves us to accept a full-time position elsewhere. I wish him well and thank him for his hard work while he was here.
  • Finally, I thank Lowe's of Washington very much for their recent donation of three trees - two pin oaks and one Shumard Oak to help beautify our campus. Coordinator of Grounds and Landscaping Mike Pensock and his team will begin planting these new trees in the next few weeks.
