Tillis Announces House to Take Override Veto on Voter ID | Eastern North Carolina Now

For Immediate Release

Bill Cook: Here is some information for your articles. I am very proud of the Speaker and my fellow Republican law makers for taking a stand on this issue. I plan to vote a loud yea for this override of Bev's veto. We will see how many Democrats have the guts to do the "right thing" and vote with us. Please ask your friends and neighbors to email their Democrat Representatives and Senators telling them to vote for the Voter I D Bill.

    Rep. Thom Tillis
    Speaker of the House

Raleigh - House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-Mecklenburg) announced today that the North Carolina House will attempt to override Gov. Bev Perdue's veto of the voter ID bill when the body reconvenes in July.

"Governor Perdue has chosen to veto a bill that over 75% of North Carolinians support and more than a dozen other states utilize," Tillis said. "Governor Perdue continues to play politics and she has once again turned her back on the voters of our state. Republicans in the state House will not let this stand. We will take the lead and we will work for an override vote on the voter ID bill when the House reconvenes in July."

Tillis said the House will notice the veto override once the House reconvenes in July for a brief session on redistricting. The override vote will occur during the July session.

"This legislation is a no-brainer," Tillis said. "Requiring a photo ID to vote is a measure that provides confidence in voting and protects the integrity of our electoral process. Why this bill was vetoed is beyond me, but we will not stand idly by while the Governor and her liberal allies put politics before principle. We simply want North Carolina to join the majority of states that have an ID requirement when someone shows up to vote."

The voter ID bill, known as the "Restore Confidence in Government Act," has consistently received substantial support of the voters across party lines. If citizens do not possess photo identification, the bill stipulates that free photo identification can be provided at DMV locations or local Boards of Elections.

"This is not a partisan issue, nor is it defined by political controversy in other states," said Tillis. "The Governor is out of touch with the people in her state, and we intend to make that very clear to the citizens of North Carolina in the days and months ahead."

Publisher's Note: Some years ago, I was place on the Democrat mailing list, which I duly noted, that gives me almost all of their talking points before they parrot them over and over again. Here below are the latest set of Democrat talking points from David Parker, Chairman of NC Democrats.

Friends,

Most days it seems the only thing stopping the Republican legislature from repealing the entire 20th century is Governor Perdue. Just a few minutes ago, she vetoed the single most blatant attack on voting rights in North Carolina since Jim Crow, the Republican Voter ID bill.

North Carolina Democrats have been fighting this bill for five months. We need your help to keep up a coordinated defense of voting rights by making a small donation right now. Go to www.ncdp.org to make a contribution.

This Republican General Assembly, which will be turned out of office in a fair fight, is trying to change the rules to keep the people from being heard. Their attempts at rigging the elections, even before the voting starts, would make it more difficult for seniors, college students, newly married/divorced women, and African Americans to vote. The GOP silences those voices so they can manufacture a majority.

In July, the GOP-led General Assembly will continue to work on bills that propose to eliminate convenient early voting, Sunday voting, same day voter registration and reducing the time frame for early voting-- all things fair government advocates and Democrats know increase participation in our Democracy.

The GOP sees our volunteers spreading out through neighborhoods and college campuses, registering new voters. New voters made up the margin of victory for President Obama in North Carolina in 2008 and they will do anything to keep them away from the polls.

The Republican agenda offers nothing to most hard working North Carolinians. Our North Carolina is better than that. Generations of us have worked and fought together for a hundred years to ensure that all people who are eligible to vote can do so without arbitrary hurdles. They know the difference between right-sizing government and doing what's right by our people.

Thank you, Governor Perdue-- for placing your full faith in the good people of North Carolina by protecting their right to vote.

David Parker
