    Publisher's note: If one understands the military, or the quasi-military, which a well run sheriff's office is, one knows that rank is important, but mostly in a relative sense.

    Actually, what the new Beaufort County sheriff, Ernie Coleman, has done is rearrange departments with lower ranked positions. Much of this endeavor is ranking semantics, and the new sheriff is wise to arrange his department as he sees fit this early in his administration.
