College of The Albemarle and Emmerich Theatre Production Company to present Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling

College of The Albemarle in Elizabeth City will present Steel Magnolias, as part of its 2014/15 Performing Arts Center season, April 9 - 12, 2015. The cast is made up of 6 talented actresses and the action of the play takes place in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana. The show is being directed by Jeffrey Emmerich, drama director, and Associate Drama Professor at College of The Albemarle in Elizabeth City, NC. The Broadway version of the show is being produced at COA by the Emmerich Theatre Production Company.

The play is very similar to the movie and has the same powerful impact as the movie starring Dolly Parton and Sally Field. Truvy's beauty salon is the place where all the ladies who are "anybody" in Chinquapin come to have their hair done. The show is filled with hilarious banter and not a few prickly, but humorously revealing, verbal collisions. The play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby, who is a diabetic, risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength, and love, which gives the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

The familiar characters of Truvy, Annelle, Ouiser, Clairee, Shelby, and M'Lynn, are all part of this nostalgic and emotional "dramedy." The movie version of the show helped launch Julia Roberts into stardom. First produced in 1989, Steel Magnolias has become a favorite both in the South and across the United States.
