Tansey Topics: A Weekly Look At What's Happening At BCCC From President Barbara Tansey | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Registration for Summer Term 2015 and Fall Semester 2015 began this week and early reports indicate that registration is going well. Advising sessions have been offered by Student Services with the Registrar's Office, Office of Financial Aid and others discussing various aspects of registration and advising. Thanks to all faculty and staff who have worked so hard to make this a seamless registration.

Here's what else is happening on our campus:

"BCCC's Best" Nominations

  • Nominations are being accepted through Tuesday, April 21, for the last "BCCC's Best" character trait to be recognized this academic year. The character trait for April is "Hard Worker - someone who demonstrates a work ethic that will lead to success." To nominate a student send an email to Director of Counseling Kimberly Jackson with "BCCC's Best" in the subject line. In the body of the email, list the student's name, student identification number if you have it and a short description (10 lines or fewer) of how the student has exemplified this trait in your class or your contact with them. Any staff or faculty member can nominate a student. Nominated students will be recognized Tuesday, April 28. If you have any questions, please contact Kimberly at 252-940-6252. Following the summer break, "BCCC's Best" will be recognized again starting in September.

BCCC Foundation

  • Are you ready for a nice game of croquet? If so, plan to join the BCCC Foundation for the 12th Annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament on Saturday, May 16, along the waterfront in Bath. The tournament is an annual fund-raiser to continue the Dorothy and John Tankard Memorial Scholarship for a Bath or Belhaven student at BCCC and for enhancing Historic Bath, to which the Tankards were dedicated. Corporate sponsors to date are Atlantic Aviation, Crop Production Services, P & G Manufacturing Tankard Farms, the Tankard family and the TriCounty Telecom Foundation. As in previous years, the tournament will be held in conjunction with Bath Fest and will feature a luncheon catered by well-known chef Paul Cyr. For more information, contact Marcia Norwood, Foundation Specialist, at 252-940-6218 or Foundation Executive Director Serena Sullivan at 252-940-6326.

Business and Industrial Technology

  • Faculty and students in our Mechanical Engineering Technology Program have been working hard designing and fabricating medals for winners in the inaugural Gull Run and in the Automotive Technology Program's Car Show. You can see some of their work on the Beaufort County Community College Facebook Page. Thanks to Lead Instructor Matthew Lincoln and his students for their work on this project.

Campus Police

  • BCCC Campus Police Chief Chris Harrison thanks all who attended the inaugural Coffee with a Cop last week and shares the answers to two questions that were posed by attendees. Officers with the BCCC Police Department are on duty 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Fridays. If there is a need for an officer outside of these normal operating hours, you are required to give a minimum of 30 days notice so the department can accommodate your request for campus events, if police officers are available. Requests for police officer coverage for campus events for outside organizations must be made through the Human Resources Office. Also remember that the duty line for campus police is 252-943-8721. If there is an emergency please call 9-1-1 instead of the duty line.

Continuing Education

  • R U Work Ready? If not, the Division of Continuing Education has scheduled a series of six three-hour workshops to help job seekers with various aspects of their search. The workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, 22 and 29 from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. to prepare for the Beaufort County Job Fair to be held Wednesday, May 6. For more information about the workshops, contact Lou Stout, director of Workforce Initiatives, at 252-940-6307.

Graduate photos

  • Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards is looking for more than a few good photos of students who will be graduating this year. The photos will be used in a video that will be presented at the Graduate and Outstanding Student Recognition Ceremony to be held Tuesday, April 21. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to send photos to her as soon as possible for inclusion in the video.

Gullfest

  • Thanks very much to Director of Personal Enrichment Programs Clay Carter and Automotive Technology Instructor Richie Alligood and the automotive students who appeared on WITN News at Sunrise early Monday morning. Clay discussed Little Gulls Zone activities and Richie and his students talked about the car show that will be held during Gullfest 2015. I hope everyone has marked their calendars to attend Gullfest on Saturday, April 18, and the inaugural Gull Run on Sunday, April 19. Funds raise from the event will support student scholarships, the emergency grant fund and other critical needs of the college.

Senior Fair

  • BCCC welcomed folks from across the county to the annual Senior Fair on Thursday. Those attending had the chance to hear remarks from Dr. John Inzerillo, visit with vendors, have lunch in the Campus Cafe and receive a manicure in our cosmetology school. Thanks very much to Foundation Specialist Marcia Norwood for spearheading BCCC's participation in this event, to our cosmetology students and faculty and all who helped with this project.

Personal and Personnel Notes:

  • I extend congratulations to Accounting Specialist Diane Evans upon her retirement after 21 years at BCCC. We will miss Diane but we know she is looking forward to this new adventure in her life!
  • Congratulations also to Instructor Heea Crownfield whose paper constructions are on display in a two-woman show at Roverworks Gallery in Greenville, S.C. Heea was one of three BCCC employees whose donated works to the N.C. Community College system office for its permanent art display.
