ECU Travel Experts Offer Tips For A Green Summer | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's note: The author of this post, Daniel Johnson, is a contributor to ECU News Services.

With Memorial Day weekend ushering in the start of summer, many people look forward to trips to the beach, pool parties and home barbecues. The East Carolina University Center for Sustainability and Students for Sustainability offer tips for celebrating a "greener" summer season.

  • Use reusable plates, cups and utensils at cookouts instead of disposables.
  • Fill pitchers with cool beverages instead of purchasing individual bottles.
  • Use reusable water bottles instead of plastic.
  • Looking for a new grill? Consider gas, propane or an electric grill instead of charcoal or wood. They burn cleaner and more efficiently.
  • If you have a charcoal grill, make sure you burn natural lumps and don't use more than you need.
  • While traveling, recycle, use water wisely, turn off lights and keep thermostats as you would at home.
