Goose Creek State Park Calendar of Events for August | Eastern North Carolina Now

Sunday, August 07, 2011      Dragonflies at Goose Creek      3 p.m.

In the swamps and marshes of Goose Creek a predator lurks. Soaring through the swamp grasses and patrolling open areas in search of their prey. These aerial pilots of our wetlands fly with the grace and skill of combat pilots. What has such grace and skill? - Goose Creek’s dragonflies! Meet at the Visitor Center for an informational program and a brief walk to discover the wonderful world of dragonflies.

Sunday, August 14, 2011       Timber Rattlesnakes at Goose Creek      3 p.m.

As you walk through the forest, enjoying the sights and sounds of your surroundings, you hear a rattle. Instantly, you stop where you are; listening, scanning, searching. The hair on the back of your neck rises. Come visit the Goose Creek Environmental Education/Visitor Center to learn about an animal that so many people fear, the Timber Rattlesnake.

Traditionally made from cacti tubes with hundreds of cactus spines hammered into them, ours will be made using mailing tubes and chicken wire. Please bring your own poster-mailing tube to this one-hour program. All other supplies will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
