Board of Trustees charts the college's course
At the top of the chain of command at Beaufort County Community College is the Board of Trustees, which sets policy for the college and is composed of members of the community.
Members of the Board of Trustees serve four-year terms. The Beaufort County Board of Education, the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners and the Governor of North Carolina each appoint one member annually, so that at any given time, there are four members of the board appointed by each of those bodies, for a total of 12 members. A post on the Board of Trustees is an unpaid appointment. The President of the Student Government Association serves as a non-voting member.
Those who serve do so because they believe in and support the mission of Beaufort County Community College. They come from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to education and business. They are active in the community, encouraging its members to both support the college and to take advantage of the learning opportunities it provides.
The President of the college answers directly to the Board of Trustees, which is also responsible for making policy decisions regarding the acquisition of property, and for educational programs, approving new or revised policies, finances and more. The Board of Trustees holds a regular meeting every other month and called meetings as needed. It is responsible for ensuring that the college maintains adherence to the accreditation requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Each Trustee is required to adhere to a code of ethics and to attend orientation and training sessions provided by the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees, which works to further the goals and development of the state's 58 community colleges.
The current members of the Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees are Laura Staton, Chair; Betty Randolph, Vice Chair; Jim Chesnutt; Cynthia Davis; James Gaynor; Cornell McGill; James "Cotton" Rawls; Russell Smith; Mitchell St. Clair Sr.; Bill Wall; and Ashley Woolard. There is one unfilled seat awaiting an appointment from the office of the governor.
New Student Orientation
- Our New Student Orientation sessions have been well-attended. Since the last session on Aug. 12 was already full, an additional session was added on Friday, Aug. 14 to accommodate those students still applying and registering for classes.
Board of Trustees
- The BCCC Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, Aug. 4. The board voted to approve the 2015 Strategic Plan, the revised refund policy, the revised compensatory leave policy, the revised travel policy, and the revised Campus Sexual Violence Act/Violence Against Women Act Policy.
- The board also voted to approve the purchase of a 14-acre tract of land located east of the college. The cost of the purchase will be funded by the county and the BCCC Foundation, and the property will eventually be home to a new burn tower and a driving pad.
TRiO Grant
- The U.S. Department of Education has notified BCCC that our grant application for a Student Support Services (SSS) project under the TRiO program has been selected for funding for the next five-year grant cycle. The funds are intended to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase retention and graduation rates.
BCCC Foundation
- The 22nd Annual BCCC Foundation Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, 2015. Team and hole sponsorships are now available, and proceeds will provide emergency student grants. - The Beaufort County Community College Foundation and the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a 10-day trip to Italy that will include some of the country's most beautiful and historic sites. A special presentation about the trip is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Building 10 on BCCC's campus. - The BCCC Foundation Board of Directors met on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The board received updates on the Digital Sign; fundraising events such as DPAC trips, the Garden Tour, and the Croquet Tournament; and Foundation investments. Dr. Charles Boyette and Helen Sommerkamp-Inman were re-appointed as Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively. Luther Davis, Sue Nicholson, Kendra Paiz, Jerry Water, Radell Rasmussen, and Floyd Brothers were recognized for their service with the Ripple Award.
