TMc: Obsolete Counties & Courthouses | Eastern NC Now

    Sad but true that most of the beautiful courthouses are surrounded by abandoned small towns and county business is conducted in new buildings miles away. The small counties are also obsolete designed to be within a one day wagon ride from outlying homes.

    For that matter, who needs a separate North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, and especially North and South Dakota? Georgia once included Alabama and Mississippi. But for now let's look at these beautiful, outdated courthouses that cost a fortune to maintain.

    If we can remove historic flags off the top of these buildings, why can't we just remove the building at the same time? Yes. Remove the monuments to famous Black and White folks while you're at it.

It is interesting to me that we only have 25% of the Georgia Population still living in rural areas. As a City boy from Atlanta, I would have thought it was higher.

North Carolina for those interested is 34% rural and 66% Urban.

"For the 2010 Census, an urban area will comprise a densely settled core of census tracts and/or census blocks that meet minimum population density requirements, along with adjacent territory containing non-residential urban land uses as well as territory with low population density included to link outlying densely settled territory with the densely settled core. To qualify as an urban area, the territory identified according to criteria must encompass at least 2,500 people, at least 1,500 of which reside outside institutional group quarters. The Census Bureau identifies two types of urban areas:
• Urbanized Areas (UAs) of 50,000 or more people;
• Urban Clusters (UCs) of at least 2,500 and less than 50,000 people.
“Rural” encompasses all population, housing, and territory not included within an urban area". US Census web site -Are you confused by the explanation too?
