Press Release:

The College of The Albemarle Performing Arts Center will present the musical "King David (Sweet Psalmist of Israel)" June 24 - July 1. This production, by composer Gloria Emmerich, features a cast of 30.

The cast has been staging the show and rehearsing choreography and music since May 2. Early in the story young David is anointed to one day be king of Israel by the prophet Samuel. Soon, David finds himself on the battlefield where, to everyone's amazement, he slays the giant, Goliath. As a result, King Saul becomes jealous of David and plots to kill him. David's marriage to Saul's daughter, Michel and his extraordinary friendship with Saul's son, Jonathan further complicates the story. Woven into the plot is the undeserved anger King Saul felt toward David and the time David spent hiding from him in the desert.

Highlights in the show include the coronation of David as King, Jonathan's heroic efforts to protect David and the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem.

The cast features Jeffrey Emmerich as King David, Nathan Schierer as King Saul and Layah Fauth as David's wife, Michael. The role of Jonathan, Saul's son and friend of David, is played by Richard Merrick. David's mother, and the narrator in this musical, is being portrayed by playwright, Gloria Emmerich. The show is being choreographed by Mariah Schierer who also plays David's sister, Zeruiah. The familiar story of David as both a shepherd and warrior is inspiring.
