Governor Cooper Announces Ten New Appointments to Boards and Commissions | Eastern NC Now

    RALEIGH: Governor Roy Cooper today announced ten more appointments and elections to North Carolina commissions and boards, including the North Carolina State Commission for Public Health, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, and the Coastal Resources Commission.

    "I appreciate these North Carolinians from a variety of fields and walks of life using their time and talents to serve our state," Gov. Cooper said.

    To the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, Gov. Cooper has reappointed two members of the Board of Directors:

• Gene Davis, JD. A Raleigh native, Davis received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of North Carolina and represents small- and medium-sized businesses on matters ranging from real estate to business formation and growth. He is Vice-Chair of the Raleigh Arts Commission and also serves on the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Museum of Art.
• Christopher C. Parrish of Garner. Parrish received his bachelor's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and MBA from Appalachian State. An experienced housing developer, he is the majority owner of his own agency, Parrish Manor, Inc. He has served on the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center and also founded the Nessie Foundation, a non-profit serving at-risk youth.

    To the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees` Retirement System Board of Trustees, Governor Cooper has named:

• Commissioner Brenda Howerton of Durham. An executive coach and CEO of her own consulting firm, Commissioner Howerton is a member of the Durham County Commission since 2008. She is currently President-Elect of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.
• To the Coastal Resources Commission, Governor Cooper has appointed:
• Doug Medlin, Mayor of Surf City. In addition to teaching public school in Hanover and Pender counties, Mayor Medlin has served on the Surf City Council for almost 20 years. He is also an active member of Kiwanis and Faith Harbor Methodist Church and a proud grandfather of seven.

    To the North Carolina State Commission for Public Health, Governor Cooper has named:

• Dr. Ron May chair of the commission. After attending the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Dr. May completed his residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was appointed to the Commission by the North Carolina Medical Society in 2001 and was elected vice chair in 2014. Dr. May, of New Bern, is Vice President of Medical Affairs for CarolinaEast Health System.

    To the North Carolina Teachers` and State Employees` Retirement System Board of Trustees, Gov. Cooper has named:

• Joshua Smith as a Public Member. Smith is a fire captain who lives in Statesville. He has served as fire captain for 15 years and as treasurer for Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics of North Carolina. He received his doctorate in education and leadership from Appalachian State University in 2017.
• Margaret Reader as an Active State Employee Member. Reader, of Raleigh, currently serves as human resources director for the Office of Administrative Hearings. Reader is the district chairperson for the State Employee's Association of North Carolina and is on the State Scholarship Board.
• Jeff Winstead as a Retired State Employee Member. Winstead, of Raleigh, has served North Carolina for 48 years through the fire department, police department, and as a charter member of the town's rescue squad. Winstead also served on the N.C. Passenger Safety Association, School Bus Safety Advisory Commission, Operation Life Saver Speakers Bureau, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the NCCU Political/Community Relations Board.

    To the North Carolina State Board of Examiners for Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, Gov. Cooper has named:

• Stuart Schwartz as a Plumbing Contractor Member. Schwartz, of Raleigh operates Schwartz Plumbing Company, in business since 1991. He received his plumbing license after attending Wake Technical Community College's plumbing school.
• William Harold Eubanks as a Municipal Plumbing or Mechanical Inspector Member. Eubanks, of Wilmington, currently serves as an active reserve inspector for the City of High Point Building Inspection Department. Eubanks served as chief code enforcement official for the Plumbing & Mechanical Division in New Hanover County and holds multiples licenses and certifications in this field.
