Small Business Saturday- A Big Day for Small Businesses | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

GREENVILLE, NC     Uptown Greenville rallies consumers to shop local during the annual "Small Business Saturday" event held on November 25.

Founded by American Express and held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday is an exclusive event for small retailers and other community businesses. Welcoming its eighth year, Small Business Saturday is a promotional platform for local merchants of all kinds.

"Shopping local helps small businesses thrive in the Uptown District," said Ryan Webb, Uptown board chair. "Many retailers and restaurants will be open both days (Black Friday and Small Business Saturday)."

According to the Small Business Saturday Insights Survey, released by the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express, consumer support for independently owned businesses is increasing. In fact, North Carolina is home to over 800,000 small businesses. In 2016, 112 million consumers poured over 15 billion dollars into small businesses around the nation.

"Small Business Saturday provides people an opportunity to discover and celebrate the variety of small businesses that make their communities thrive," said Elizabeth Rutledge, Executive Vice President, Global Advertising & Brand Management at American Express. "Beyond visiting their favorite go-to spots, shoppers say Small Business Saturday inspires them to visit places they have not been to before and would not have otherwise tried."

Eight years after its inauguration, 90 percent of U.S. consumers report they are aware of Small Business Saturday, and among those who are aware, 82 percent say they plan to patronize a small, independently owned retailer or restaurant on November 25.
