Library Photo ID's | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's Note: Jim Bispo's weekly column appears in the Beaufort Observer.

Has anyone noticed that Pitt County has it's own standard for what comprises discrimination. In Pitt County (according to an article in the 1/16 edition of the Greenville newspaper) your photo needs to be on file at the library in order to check out a book or to take advantage of other library services. That is clearly not discrimination. Not against minorities, the poor or the elderly. Of course not. Not when the library does it. Yet, in North Carolina requiring a photo ID in order to vote clearly discriminates against minorities, the poor and the elderly. Our Governess said so - and she is supported by a lot of the so called "skin merchants" (i.e. those whose continued existence and prosperity depends on playing the "race card" at every opportunity). Do you suppose the Libraries are trying to keep the elderly, the poor and minorities from being able to take advantage of all the learning opportunities available at the library?? That would certainly be one way to keep those cohorts dependent on others to "help" them with their selections when it is time to vote. Hmmm...

Actually, there are folks who believe the library requirement is even worse than the photo ID requirement because the library's photos are in digital form inside the library's computers rather than in someone's purse or wallet. That would seem to make the photos much less secure - or does anyone care?? Reportedly hackers have penetrated credit card companies and banks and airlines and even the pentagon, all organizations which should (and hopefully do) pay a lot of attention to the integrity of the electronic data they have stored in their computers. If hackers are able to penetrate those levels of security, just how difficult do you suppose it would be to get into the Pitt County Library database?? The ID you carry in your wallet is under your control. The ID in the library's computer is not. So whom do you trust more??

How do you suppose our Governess let anyone get away with something as grievous as limiting the use of publically funded libraries to those with their photo in the library's computer(s)?? Old folks, the poor and minorities are surely not any more capable of getting their photo taken to ID them at the library than they are to ID them at the voting precinct. What do you suppose has become of Eric Holder and his guardians of the rights of the aged, the poor and minorities?? Why haven't they jumped on the Pitt County Library system?? They certainly seem to have taken exception to similar requirements enacted in a number of states to help keep voting on the up and up. Clearly, requiring a photo ID in order to vote would do some amount of violence to the "Vote early, Vote often" philosophy reportedly prevalent in a lot of places.

Apparently all it takes to "prove" something involving minorities to the Justice Department is an allegation of racial injustice by one of the alphabet groups determined to capitalize on their minority status. The allegation is the proof. Wow!!! As an aside, with a little wider acceptance of that notion, we could really speed up our justice system. People like the shooter who killed all the folks at Ft. Hood would not still be awaiting trial. He would have been tried and dispatched by now. Likewise, the shooter who shot Rep Giffords and killed several other folks at the Tucson shopping center over a year ago. We should have tried him by now and meted out whatever justice is appropriate. Is there any doubt as to who shot all those folks at Ft. Hood or who shot Rep. Giffords and all the others in Tucson?? Not really.

The argument against requiring photo IDs as a requisite for voting is that there has been no evidence of fraud. Do you suppose if it could happen in NY State, it could happen here?? Click here to see what's going on in New York. (Yes, I know the trial isn't over and no one has been convicted.- yet) Actually, it would seem to be unlikely to happen here because law violations here, unlike New York, are frowned upon. Except, perhaps when it is our Governor - or Governess - or both - failing to report all the free airplane rides they took when they were campaigning or all the great deals they got on the purchase of prime waterfront real estate and things like that or the CEOs of 501(c)(3) who allegedly enrich themselves at the public's expense (in addition to the taxpayer funded salary they draw as a state legislator). And rumor has it that the recent Sheriff's election in a neighboring county had dead people voting in it. If you don't think it could happen here, think again.

There are a lot of folks who believe that the minor inconvenience of acquiring a photo ID is a small price to pay to help ensure the integrity of our elections.

    D'ya think??
