    Nelson Leonard Engebretsen, 81, of Washington, NC, passed away in Greenville, NC on Tuesday, January 30, after a short illness.

    A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church in Washington, NC.

    Nelson was a loving and fun-loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His greatest joys were spending time with his family, taking trips to Nebraska, and his church. He loved watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers football games and Duke basketball games. Nelson was a cattle rancher and cowboy in Nebraska before moving to Aurora, North Carolina with his family in 1970. The center and focus of his life was Roberta, his best friend and wife of 62 years. Together, they built a caring, loving family and have been by each other's sides each and every day.

    Nelson is survived by his wife Roberta, of Washington, NC, his sister Barbara Hall of Fargo, North Dakota and three fortunate children, Cindy Bland (Rick) of Brevard, NC, Steve (Teresa) of Durham, NC and David (Kim) of Newport, NC, grandchildren Aaron and Katie Bland and great granddaughter Lily of Brevard, Jake Engebretsen and Elizabeth and great granddaughter Kennedy of Raleigh, Grant Engebretsen of Charleston, SC, and Makayla Smith of Newport, NC.

    Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lucille Engebretsen, of Harrison, Nebraska and his sister, Linda Stetson, brother-in-law, Rod Stetson, of Crawford, Nebraska and brother-in-law Dick Hall of Fargo, North Dakota.

    The family will receive friends on Monday, February 5, 2018 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, NC.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Eagle's Wings in Washington, NC.
