I am running for Sheriff because we need a change in the Sheriff's Office.

    News Release:

My name is Donald Dixon, and I'm running for Sheriff of Beaufort County.

I am running for Sheriff because we need a change in the Sheriff's Office. We do not need a person who believes he is a king as Sheriff. We do not need a Sheriff who refuses to operate in an open, cooperative and transparent manner. We need someone who sees himself as a servant of the people, not as a potentate. We need a Sheriff who believes in cooperating with other county officials and agencies. As Sheriff, my number one priority will be to protect the rights of the law-abiding citizens of Beaufort County. I will be that kind of Sheriff if you elect me.

Many of you may realize that this isn't the first time I've run for this position, I have campaigned and walked many miles all across our County listening to the people. Each time I sign my name to begin these adventures, I am reminded of what a great country we live in. In America we can vote for who we believe will do the best job, we can run for office ourselves and be that candidate that will make a difference. I count myself truly blessed to be here again, and with so much support.

I do not take this lightly. It is an honor and a privilege to run for any public office, and the Sheriff's Office is one for which I have worked and for which I have trained for over 12 years. Your vote is worth the effort, and I would never ask for your support if I wasn't willing to give the position my very best.

I promise you, the citizens, the deputies, and officials of this County, that I will work towards fixing the problems at the Sheriff's Office. I believe we can reduce the Sheriff's wasteful spending of tax dollars, have a professional relationship with the Commissioners and judges, and diminish drugs and crimes in our county. That is the end goal, to increase the quality of life of our citizens - our families. I believe that takes leadership-working with people and agencies, not bullying them.

I believe I am more qualified by training, experience and temperament than my opponent to lead the Sheriff's Office. As an officer, I carried out my duties in a professional and ethical manner. I have worked as a deputy and supervisor in this county for 5 years and a licensed investigator throughout North Carolina for over 13 years. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Olive College and a Masters degree from ECU, both in criminal justice. I am currently the lead Criminal Justice Instructor at Martin Community College. I have also been self-employed as a small business owner for over 30 years in Beaufort County. I know what it is like to meet a payroll and pay property taxes before you draw a paycheck yourself.

Undoubtedly, the greatest attribute that I can add to my resume for Sheriff is my Christian faith. Having grown up in a loving Christian home, I've learned life lessons that I have held fast. Of course, I've learned right from wrong, but also lessons of loving thy neighbor, forgiveness, living a moral and ethical life, just simply doing what's right and serving my fellowman. These are things that I've tried to practice in my life, and have passed on to my daughters.

I realized, even at a very young age, that I do not have all the answers. I believe that answers come from teamwork. We now have a Sheriff who believes deputies and staff in the Sheriff's Office work for him. I will view myself as working with a team of dedicated professionals. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office will no longer be cloaked in darkness and held out of sight from the citizens it serves. I will assure that information that may answer hard questions, or ease a family's suffering, or that brings justice, is made available in a timely manner. Our Commissioners and the public will not be wondering where their hard-earned tax money goes, or if the Sheriff is serving the citizens' best interest. There will be no more private use of county taxpayer funded equipment.

The hard-working Deputies in Beaufort County will all be invited to keep their employment, they will not need to worry about rumors of a new Sheriff "cleaning house". Policies will be put in place to insure officer safety and increased job performance and satisfaction.

I promise that you can look back at any time after I'm elected Sheriff and be proud of your vote cast for me, Donald Dixon. I will be the Sheriff you were hoping to elect. You will see a professional organization that is able to work well with other agencies, businesses, and citizens to accomplish more.

Thank you for your vote and support.
