Gov. Cooper Announces Judicial Appointments in Two Districts | Eastern North Carolina Now

    RALEIGH: Today, Governor Cooper announced new judicial appointments in Districts 9 and 27A.

    "These appointees bring important experience, dedication to the law, and a commitment to justice to their positions," Gov. Cooper said. "I'm grateful for their service to the people of North Carolina."

    Gov. Cooper appointed the Honorable Carolyn Thompson as a Superior Court Judge in District 9, serving Vance, Granville, Franklin, and Warren counties. She replaces Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Robert H. Hobgood, who is retiring at the end of April.

    Thompson has served as a District Court Judge in District 9 since 2009, where she has presided over civil, criminal, domestic, juvenile, and mental health proceedings. She has also served as a mentor and volunteer for teen and truancy courts. She holds degrees from Hampton University, North Carolina Central School of Law and Shaw University School of Divinity.

    Gov. Cooper has appointed David Phillips as a Superior Court Judge in District 27A, serving Gaston County. He replaces Judge Robert T. Sumner, who retired earlier this month.

    Phillips has worked as an attorney in Gaston County for over 20 years. He served on the Gaston County Board of Education for 12 years, ending his tenure as Chairman in 2014. He holds degrees from Appalachian State University and Mercer University School of Law.
