    Betty Lou Bowen Hewitt, 73, formerly of Pinetown, NC died in her home near Washington, D.C. on July 10, 2018.

    She was born on August 28, 1944 in Washington, NC to the late Elizabeth Blanche Carrow Bowen and Mark Rufus Bowen. She attended Bath High School and Woodrow Wilson Beauty School. After many years of adventure, she married Charles Lee Hewitt Jr. in 1978. The two remained married until his death in 2006. She is also predeceased by her sons, Christopher, Benjamin and Esau.

    Betty was a cosmetologist and homemaker until she retired. Several years after retiring, she joined her daughter in her military adventures. She will be remembered as a vivacious, bold, beautiful woman with a quick wit and a big smile. She loved bird, squirrel and deer watching from her back deck, enjoyed a good mystery novel or show and actively supported several veterans' organizations. She also loved animals of all kinds, especially poodles and stray cats that worked their way into her heart and home. She was a member of Five Points Free Will Baptist Church in Pinetown.

    Betty is survived by her daughter, Joy Elizabeth of the Washington, D.C. area; brothers and sisters in law, Mark Rufus Bowen Jr. and Janet of Pinetown and George Bowen and Mertis of Prattville, AL; nieces and nephews; best friends, Joyce and George Tetterton of Pinetown and Deborah Bebee of Navarre, FL; quasi-children, Eric Collins, Ambre Tate and Mickey Smith; quasi-grandson, Jaxon Smith; faithful companion, Harry the cat; and her "grandpets", Marlowe and Oliver.

    A memorial service will be held for close friends and family at a future date. In lieu of flowers or condolences, please send donations to the ASPCA or American Lung Association.
