New NCGOP Leadership To Inherit Robust Party Headed Into Key 2020 Election Cycle

Raleigh, NC - As the North Carolina Republican Party prepares to elect new leadership at this weekend's 2019 NCGOP State Convention, new polling results show the Republican Party brand and its candidates in strong shape going into 2020, and the RNC National Convention being held in Charlotte.

POLL HIGHLIGHTS

President Trump has an overall approval rating of 57-43.

President Trump leads a hypothetical matchup with former Vice President Joe Biden 52-41.

While both Governor Cooper and Lt. Governor Dan Forest enjoy positive approval ratings, Lt. Gov. Forest leads a hypothetical matchup 44-40.

"Roy Cooper's job approval ratings in the past year have benefited from the strong economy, business friendly tax climate and school choice policies put in place by strong conservative leadership in the General Assembly," stated Spry Strategies Founder Ryan Burrell. "Republicans are in a better position to take the Governor's Mansion in 2020 and North Carolina is a little more red than in 2016 when President Trump won the state."

The poll also shows strong support for Republican-lead policies supporting more school choice and additional charter schools, and shows strong opposition to the expansion of Medicaid. Once voters learn that the federal funds to expand Medicaid are not guaranteed and that expansion would allow able-bodied men of working age to collect the expanded benefits, support drops dramatically. A recent Civitas poll found similar results when respondents were told about the $340M cost to North Carolina taxpayers if the state expanded Medicaid.

Previous Civitas poll results found that the North Carolina Republican Party enjoys a plus five favorability rating while the North Carolina Democrat Party treads water.

Additionally, the most recent data regarding voter registration show the continued hemorrhaging of voters from the Democrat Party as their policies slide further and further out of the mainstream. Since October 2015 and through May 2019, the North Carolina Republican Party has gained more than 50,000 voters while the North Carolina Democrat Party has lost more than 158,000. The registration advantage the NCDP one had over the NCGOP has shrunk to seven percent from eleven percent.

The poll conducted by Spry Strategies polled likely voters with a history of voting in at least one of the last three General Elections, using the North Carolina 2016 Turnout model; 730 likely voters completed using a mix of on-line, landline and cell phones responses.
