In this academic competition, students are asked to read off of a list of twenty-seven books selected each year by the North Carolina School Library Media Association, form teams, and compete by answering questions about those books.

Kayla Whitesell to Attend National Young Leaders State Conference in March

Having a chance to attend a National Young Leaders State Conference [NYLSC] is an outstanding opportunity for any student who possesses the qualities needed to be a strong leader, but needs the extra push to become that leader. Earlier this school year, Erin Dancer, language arts teacher at P.S. Jones Middle School, submitted eighth grader, Kayla Whitesell’s name, as a potential candidate to participate in the organization’s state conference this spring. Dancer believed that Kayla’s outstanding academics, potential leadership qualities, and strong desire to succeed, matched the criteria that NYLSC looks for when accepting participants into their leadership programs. If accepted, Dancer knew this could be just the right opportunity for Kayla to build her confidence in taking on school leadership roles more often.

In January, Kayla received word from the NYLSC that she was chosen as a participant, and invited to attend the organization’s four day conference, to be held in Spartanburg, South Carolina, March 29th, through April 1st. While attending the conference, Kayla will interact with other students her age, participating in activities that teach responsible leadership as a process of building both strong relationships, and good communication and decision-making skills. Skills learned at the conference will not only enable Kayla, and other participants to make positive differences in their communities and schools, but will also prove to be beneficial tools for planning and obtaining future goals in their personal lives.

Currently, Kayla is actively involved in a variety of extracurricular activities at PSJ, including cheerleading, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Show Choir, and PSJ Cares. Please join her parents, Brian and Christie Whitesell, in congratulating Kayla, and be sure to ask her about her experiences in Spartanburg, South Carolina when she returns from the conference on April 2, 2012!
