    Lt. Col. Quentin Hunter, 64, a resident of 851 Island Dr., Chocowinity, N.C., died Wednesday May 23, 2012, at his home.

    A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Washington, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Moore. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

    Lt. Col. Hunter was born in Baltimore, Md., on June 19, 1947, to the late Delmas and Betty Caldwell Hunter. On Nov. 22, 1969, he married Elinor Louise Strong, who survives. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. After serving in the Vietnam War where he received a Bronze Star, he served numerous years in both command and staff roles with National Guard and Army Reserve units in Pennsylvania and Maryland, primarily. He then went on to work as an accountant with the Department of Justice, overseeing grants for improving the criminal justice system.

    In January 2001, he and his wife, Elinor, retired to the Bay Harbour community in Chocowinity. There, he enjoyed fishing and crabbing in Blounts Creek, spending time with his neighbors and lunches at his favorite restaurant, Pia's of Washington. He frequently commented on how blessed he was to have found this place.

    Surviving family includes his wife, Elinor S. Hunter of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth Hensley and husband Howard and their children Justin and Dylan Hensley of Hagerstown, Md.; Elaine Segretto and husband Martin of Fredrick, Md.; one sister, Cynthia Coupe and husband Arthur of Wilmington, Del.; one sister-in-law, Irene Hunter of Glen Mills, Penn. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Lowell Hunter.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC 27834 or to the American Heart Association, 3219 Landmark St. Unit 9, Greenville, NC 27834.
