    Mr. Edsel James Clayton, age 90, a resident of 329 Smithwick Road, Belhaven, NC died Wednesday May 27, 2020 at his home.

    A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 30, 2020 at Mt. Olive Church of Christ Cemetery, officiated by Mike Caton and Randy Clayton. Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Clayton, Staten Miller, Vance Selby, William Lowe, James Lowe, Eddie Clayton, Teddy Clayton, Ricky Clayton and Chris Miller

    The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Clayton's son, Staten, located at 329 Smithwick Road, Belhaven.

    Mr. Clayton was born in Hyde County on February 4, 1930, son of the late Staten Raleigh Clayton and the late Lillian Margaret Lowe Clayton. He was a graduate of J. A. Wilkinson High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy. On March 29, 1964 he married the former Linda Joyce Wilbanks who preceded him in death on November 17, 2001. Mr. Clayton was a past member of Ponzer Ruritan Club and a member of Mt. Olive Church of Christ. He loved to read and woodworking. At the time of his retirement he was a mill right with Martin Lumber Co. in Grassy Ridge.

    Survivors include his children: Edsel James Clayton, Jr. (Marie) of Ketchikan, AK, Brenda C. Brooks (Charlie) of Pantego, Lillian C. Hurst of Greenville and Staten H. Clayton (Sybil) of Belhaven; sisters: Alice Miller of Wilmington and Margaret Miller of Newport News, VA; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. Clayton was predeceased a grandson: Owen Brooks; his brothers: Ottis Clayton, Jack Clayton, Lesley "Lek" Clayton and a sister: Verna Spencer.
