Annie Elizabeth Green Gray, 93, of Scranton, and recently of River Trace Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Washington, North Carolina, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2020, in Raleigh of complications associated with COVID-19.

Born in Hyde County on April 5, 1927, she was the daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson Green and Cora Lee Williams Green. She graduated from Sladesville High School in 1944. As a young woman, she worked as a telephone operator in Norfolk, Virginia.

On June 22, 1946, she married Kenneth Edgar Gray of Pantego. They settled in Hyde County, where they raised three daughters and were lifelong members of Eunice Chapel Church of Christ. She worked for more than 20 years listing county taxes and was also a seasonal worker for the North Carolina Ferry Division. Ann and Kenneth were married for 48 years before he preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1994.

Ann was a homemaker, an excellent cook, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, and a caretaker to several sick relatives before her own health failed. Dementia slowly robbed her of her memories, but never took away her instinct to hold, to hug and to love.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ann was preceded in death by a younger brother who died just after birth.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Gray Mayo of Scranton, Gloria Gray of Belhaven, and Patricia Gray Cahoon and her husband, Eddie, of Wendell.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason Mayo of Huntersville, Nikie Mayo and her husband, Kirk Brown, of Anderson, South Carolina, and Reggie Cahoon and his wife, Jenny, Jodie Cahoon and his wife, Liz , and Leslie Cahoon Rowell and her husband, Joshua, all of Knightdale. Ann had four great-grandchildren: Tucker Mayo, Charlotte and Georgia Cahoon and Caroline Rowell.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, October 2, 2020 at Warner Cemetery in Scranton.
