  Johnny Ray Rose, 73, of Greenville, NC, died Sunday January 24 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.

  Johnny was born October 2, 1947 at Tayloe Hospital in Washington, NC and was the son of the late Henry Thomas Rose, Jr. and Lucille Haddock Rose of Pantego, NC. Johnny spent his younger life in Pantego, NC and was a graduate of Pantego High School, and a proud Pantego Warrior. He played basketball at Pantego and all his life dearly loved his school, teachers, fellow classmates, and especially Coach Nolan Respess. His classmates in the Pantego High School class of 1965 were friends he remained close to until his death. Johnny later lived in Washington, NC and obtained a degree in Police Science from Beaufort Community College, and in Greenville, NC where he graduated with a BS degree in Criminal Justice from East Carolina University. He was a police officer in Washington, NC and Greenville, NC. In the early eighties he became the police chief of Washington, NC. He later became the police chief of East Carolina University. In 1990 he opened Pro-Tek Security Services in Greenville, NC. For the last 8 years of his career he worked for the Pitt County Sheriff Department. Johnny enjoyed his work, friends, family, Duke basketball, and especially time with his grandchildren.

  Survivors include his son Jonathan Rose and wife Katie of Greenville, NC, daughter Lauren Rose of Washington, son Cameron Rose of Washington, sister Lisa Grubbs and husband Bennie of Chocowinity, sister Donna Alligood and husband Danny of Washington, grandchildren Lucas, Conner, Carly, Sadie, Talon, nephew Chris Dennis of Greenville, NC and niece Sarah Grubbs of Washington.

  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Linda Dennis and infant sister Brenda Faye Rose.

  Due to Covid restrictions there will be a private burial and when restrictions lessen, a celebration of Johnny's life for all friends and family.

  In lieu of flowers, donations to the The Pantego Historical Museum Association, 46 Academy Street, Pantego, NC 27860 would be deeply appreciated.
