Fall semester begins Wednesday


   Late registration for fall semester at Beaufort County Community College runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Classes begin Wednesday. New students may apply to enroll in BCCC at the admissions office in Building 9 on the BCCC campus or on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu.

   Tuition and fees at Beaufort County Community College are established by the N.C. General Assembly and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges. Tuition for in-state students was recently set at $69 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour, for a total of $71 per credit hour. Tuition for out-of-state students was set at $261 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour, for a total of $263.

   Students must be in good standing to register for classes at BCCC. They should ensure that overdue library materials have been returned and any fees, fines, or other obligations to the college have been paid before completing the registration process. Notary-public class offered


    BCCC's Division of Continuing Education will offer a class that will prepare students to apply for notary-public commissions from the state. The class runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 21-22 in the auditorium of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

    The registration fee is $65. The instructor is Jennifer Whitehurst. A textbook, priced at $27, is required and should be purchased in the BCCC bookstore before the first night of class. Individuals should review the notary qualifications list on the N.C. Secretary of State website at http://www.secretary.state.nc/notary/. Students will be required to show a state-issued photo identification and Social Security card the first night of class. The course offers 0.6 continuing education units. Students should bring a small three-ring binder to class.

    This six-hour course is required for individuals who want to apply to serve as notaries public in North Carolina. Various topics relating to the duties of a notary public will be covered.

Camp focuses on law enforcement


    Some 19 participants in a weeklong camp, sponsored by the local Police Activities League, learned about law-enforcement careers at Beaufort County Community College. The young people visited the BCCC campus and heard a presentation by Leonard Hudson, director of BCCC's public-safety programs, about the activities of law-enforcement dive teams. Ben Morris, chairman of BCCC's industrial-technology and criminal-justice division, and Al Powell, PAL director and BCCC instructor, showed camp participants fingerprinting techniques used by law-enforcement officers. The camp, which also included activities at Warren Field Airport in Washington, is the first camp offered by the newly organized local PAL chapter.

Beginning conversation Spanish offered


    BCCC's Division of Continuing Education will offer a class that will prepare students to speak with their Spanish-speaking friends and co-workers, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Aug. 21 and ending Oct. 9, in Room 826 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

    The registration fee is $65. The instructor is Natalie Castro. The course offers 2.4 continuing education units. Students should bring a small three-ring binder to class.

    This 24-hour course will include basic greetings, vocabulary and phrases that individual students wish translated. The class will introduce students to basic Spanish grammar concepts, giving students the ability to create their own sentences based on the grammar they learn. The course will cover the rules of Spanish pronunciation and tenses of the most important Spanish verbs. At the end of the class, students should be able to greet people, talk about themselves and understand basic Spanish.

Flower-arranging class offered


    Learn the basics of creating beautiful flower arrangements in this class offered by BCCC's Division of Continuing.

    The class will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Aug. 21 and ending Sept. 25, in Room 830 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $35. The instructor is Shelia Bowden.

    This course will include lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice in the basics of flower arranging. Students will work with fresh and/or silk flowers to create beautiful centerpieces and arrangements and will learn to make the perfect bow.

    Students are responsible for their own materials and may bring any type of container and flowers to the class. Suggestions for additional materials will be discussed during the first class meeting. Class size is limited so early registration is recommended.

Painting class offered


    Learn still-life painting in this class offered by BCCC's Division of Continuing Education from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Aug. 23 and ending Nov. 15, in Room 826 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

    The registration fee is $45. The instructor, Linda Evans, owner of River Road Art and Design, will demonstrate how to paint water reflections, mountains, clouds, flowers, trees, rocks and more.

    The class will teach students how to manipulate mix and blend colors and how to achieve desired effects using acrylic paints. The beginner, intermediate or advance painter will feel comfortable in this class. The instructor will review a brief supply list on the first night of class.
