March 9, 1924 – May 28, 2021
    Mrs. Velna Ann Sanders Newberry, age 97, a resident of Pinetown, NC died Friday May 28, 2021 at her home.

    A funeral service will be held at 10:00AM Monday May 31, 2021 in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and will be officiated by Pastor Bobby Owens and Pastor Raymond Lagcher. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Nicholas Newberry, Pate Howell, Chris Howell, Kenneth Moore, Pat Harrington and Hank Stoop will serve as pallbearers. Cecil Wallace and Whit Howell will serve as honorary pallbearers.

    Mrs. Newberry was born in Moore County on March 9, 1924 to the late Grover Cleveland Sanders and Nepsie McKenzie Sanders. She was a treasured daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Until her retirement Mrs. Newberry taught at the Beaufort County Developmental Center. Mrs. Newberry was a master gardener and enjoyed working in her yard and in her flowers. She loved her cat Snowflake and hummingbirds. Mrs. Newberry was a volunteer cook for Pinetown Fire & Rescue and anywhere else she was needed. She was a talented seamstress for many. Mrs. Newberry was an active member of Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church and sang in the choir.

    Survivors include her daughter-in-law Lina Newberry of Pantego, five grandchildren, Michael Newberry and wife Kylee, Fallon Newberry, Hailee Carico and husband Will, Nicholas Newberry, Lindsey Newberry, one great grandchild, Lilly Newberry, a sister Louvene Fields of Moore County and many nieces and nephews.

    She is preceded in death by her husband Preston Newberry, a son, Phillip Newberry, five brothers, Reed Sanders, Ramon Sanders, Major Sanders, Clark Sanders, J.D. Sanders, and three sisters, Monnie White, Vida Richardson, and Geraldine Moore.

    The family will receive friends Sunday May 30, 2021 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
